Growing Trend in Energy Storage

Xiamen Port Makes History with First Shipment of 40-ton Super Heavy Containerized Lithium Battery Energy Storage Systems

On February 23, under the joint supervision of the Xiamen Port Authority and the Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration, 11 super heavy containerized lithium battery energy storage systems (ESS) were successfully loaded onto the Hong Kong-registered container vessel “COSCO Huanghai” at Xiamen’s Haicang Port District. The shipment, bound for Los Angeles, USA, marks a historic milestone as the first export of 40-ton ESS units from Xiamen Port, setting new records for both single-unit weight and battery capacity in the port’s history.

Record-Breaking Achievement in Energy Storage Export

Each of the ESS units shipped weighs an impressive 40 tons and features a battery capacity exceeding 5MWh, surpassing the previous benchmarks of 35 tons and 3.72MWh. This achievement not only highlights Xiamen Port’s growing capabilities in handling large-scale energy storage systems but also establishes a new channel for the export of super heavy ESS units, reinforcing its position as a key logistics hub for renewable energy technologies.

The Role of Containerized ESS in Renewable Energy

Often referred to as “giant power banks,” containerized ESS units are critical components in the renewable energy sector. These systems are widely used for the conversion, storage, and discharge of energy generated from hydropower, wind power, and solar power. As technology advances, the energy density of these systems has increased, leading to heavier and more powerful units. However, this progress also brings heightened challenges in transportation, particularly in terms of safety and logistics.

Ensuring Safe and Efficient Transport

To address the complexities of shipping such heavy and high-capacity ESS units, the Xiamen Port Authority and Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration have implemented a series of comprehensive measures. These include the establishment of four specialized storage yards for refrigerated hazardous cargo containers, optimized loading and unloading processes, and the development of China’s first maritime safety transport guidelines for containerized lithium battery energy storage systems. These guidelines, jointly issued by the Xiamen Maritime Safety Administration, Xiamen Port Authority, and Xiamen Free Trade Zone Management Committee, ensure the safe and efficient export of new energy products.

Ren Guoyan, Director of the Xiamen Port Authority, emphasized the importance of these measures. “We have enhanced storage facilities, optimized loading and unloading processes, and standardized transportation procedures to ensure the safe and reliable export of these critical energy storage systems.”

Produced by Industry Leaders

The ESS units shipped were manufactured by Xiamen Hithium Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd., a leading player in the global energy storage market. In 2024, Hithium ranked third in global market shipments for energy storage batteries. At Xiamen Lefor Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd., we are proud to use high-quality battery cells from industry leaders like Hithium and CATL in our home energy storage products, ensuring the stability and safety of our solutions.

A Growing Trend in Energy Storage Exports

This milestone shipment is part of a growing trend in the export of energy storage systems from Xiamen Port. Since 2022, the port has facilitated the safe export of over 1,800 ESS units across 70 voyages, with a total value exceeding 7 billion RMB. This latest shipment of 40-ton units represents a significant step forward in the port’s ability to handle larger and more advanced energy storage systems, further boosting its reputation as a reliable hub for renewable energy exports.

Attracting Global Attention

This achievement is expected to attract the attention of international energy storage buyers, investors, and industry stakeholders. As the demand for renewable energy solutions continues to grow, Xiamen Port’s ability to handle such large-scale shipments positions it as a strategic partner for companies looking to expand their reach in the global energy storage market.
